Prelude

Confession and Forgiveness:
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever.
Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,
We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have squandered your bountiful gifts.  We have considered the blessings of the harvest our due.  We have been indifferent in planning and planting for the future needs of your church.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, cause gratitude to ripen our hearts, and wisdom to mature in our minds, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name.  Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.
Amen.

Opening Hymn: ELW 893 “Before You, Lord, We Bow
Before you, Lord, we bow, our God who reigns above
and rules the world below with boundless pow’r and love.
Our thanks we bring in joy and praise,
our hearts we raise to you we sing!

May ev’ry mountain height, each vale and forest green,
shine forth in wisdom’s light, and its rich fruits be seen!
May ev’ry tongue be tuned to praise
and join to raise a grateful song.

Earth, hear your maker’s voice; your great redeemer own;
believe, obey, rejoice, and worship God alone.
Cast down your pride, your sin deplore,
and bow before the Crucified.

And when in pow’r he comes, oh, may then ev’ry land
from all its rending tombs send forth a glorious band,
a countless throng, with joy to sing
to heav’n’s high king salvation’s song!

Apostolic Greeting:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

Hymn of Praise:

Prayer of the Day:
Let us pray.
Holy God, our righteous judge, daily your mercy surprises us with everlasting forgiveness. Strengthen our hope in you, and grant that all the peoples of the earth may find their glory in you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

First Reading: Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22
7Although our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for your name’s sake; our apostasies indeed are many, and we have sinned against you. 8O hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, why should you be like a stranger in the land, like a traveler turning aside for the night? 9Why should you be like someone confused, like a mighty warrior who cannot give help? Yet you, O LORD, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; do not forsake us!

10Thus says the LORD concerning this people: Truly they  have loved to wander, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the LORD does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.

19Have you completely rejected Judah? Does your heart loathe Zion? Why have you struck us down so that there is no healing for us? We look for peace, but find no good; for a time of healing, but there is terror instead. 20We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, the iniquity of our ancestors, for we have sinned against you. 21Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake; do not dishonor your glorious throne; remember and do not break your covenant with us. 22Can any idols of the nations bring rain? Or can the heavens give  showers? Is it not you, O LORD our God? We set our hope on you, for it is you who do all this.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation:

Gospel: Luke 18:9-14
This is the Holy Gospel according to Luke, the 18th chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.

9He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ 13But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Children’s Message

Sermon

Hymn of the Day: ELW 599 “Lord Jesus Think on Me
Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin;
from selfish passions set me free and make me pure within.

Lord Jesus, think on me, by anxious thoughts oppressed;
let me your loving servant be and taste your promised rest.

Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray;
through darkness and perplexity point out your chosen way.

Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past,
I may the eternal brightness see and share your joy at last.

Apostle’s Creed:
Let us confess our faith using the Apostle’s Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.*
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession:
In gratitude and humility, let us join together in prayer on behalf of all of God’s creation.

Prayers continue with each petition ending:

Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

With grateful hearts, we commend our spoken and silent prayers to you, O God; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

Sharing of the Peace:
May the peace of the Lord be with you always.
And also with you.

Offertory Hymn:

Offering Prayer:
Let us pray.
Gracious God, in your great love you richly provide for our needs. Make of these gifts a banquet of blessing, and make us ready to share with all in need; through Jesus Christ, who sets a table for all.
Amen.

Thanksgiving for the Word:
Let us pray.
Praise and thanks to you, holy God, for by your Word you made all things: you spoke light into darkness, called forth beauty from chaos, and brought life into being. For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise.

By your Word you called your people Israel to tell of your wonderful gifts: freedom from captivity, water on the desert journey, a pathway home from exile, wisdom for life with you. For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise.

Through Jesus, your Word made flesh, you speak to us and call us to witness: forgiveness through the cross, life to those entombed by death, the way of your self-giving love. For your Word of life, O God, we give you thanks and praise.

Send your Spirit of truth, O God; rekindle your gifts within us: renew our faith, increase our hope, and deepen our love, for the sake of a world in need. Faithful to your Word, O God, draw near to all who call on you; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory forever. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer:
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us saying:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction:
God, who gives life to all things and frees us from despair, bless you with truth and peace. And may the holy Trinity, + One God, guide you always in faith, hope, and love.
Amen.

Sending Hymn: ELW 815 “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”
I want to walk as a child of the light.
I want to follow Jesus.
God set the stars to give light to the world.
The star of my life is Jesus.

In him there is no darkness at all.
The night and the day are both alike.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God.
Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

I want to see the brightness of God.
I want to look at Jesus.
Clear Sun of righteousness, shine on my path,
and show me the way to the Father. (chorus)

In him there is no darkness at all.
The night and the day are both alike.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God.
Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

I’m looking for the coming of Christ.
I want to be with Jesus.
When we have run with patience the race,
we shall know the joy of Jesus.

In him there is no darkness at all.
The night and the day are both alike.
The Lamb is the light of the city of God.
Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

Dismissal:
Go in peace with Christ beside you!
Thanks be to God!
